The Texas-sized news at the Great American Beer Festival was the huge showing for Austin brew pub, The ABGB. The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. netted a Gold medal in the German-Style Pilsener category (Industry), a Bronze Medal Helles in the Munich-Style Helles (Hell Yes) and
Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year. HUGE! Congrats to The AGBG team!
Texas brewers captured a total of 10 medals this year, which is down from 15 medals in 2015 and is half of what I predicted. But I have been saying that Texas was due for a major brewer/brew pub victory. So while the overall medal count was smaller than recent years, this still feels like a major victory for Texas craft beer. You can see all the winners here.
Real Ale’s Real Heavy, and Grapevine’s Sir William were both repeat GABF medalists. This is the lowest medal count for Texas craft brewers since 2013. It’s nice to see some recognition for Indy’s Cucumber Red Bud which is in contention for best Summer Austin beer in. Austin area breweries dominated the Texas medal count with five.
