One of my favorite events of Austin Beer Week is always the (512) Brewing Company’s anniversary party. This year’s event was no exception. The (512) birthday bash is always stocked with rare ales, delicious firkins, and one-off beers.
The brewery always unveils their special anniversary beer during the party. This year’s commemorative brew, Five, is a Russian Imperial Stout. Five imparts some delicious roasty malt flavor, fruit characteristics, and dry chocolatey essence. Like all Russian Imperial Stouts, it possesses a lofty ABV. Get some if you can find it. It is Stout Day.
The crowd was treated to rarities like Whiskey Barrel Double Pecan Porter, Wild Bear, and Peach Sour Mash. But, I think my favorite specialty beer of the day was Pecan Porter served in a pumpkin cask. The crew at (512) sliced open the pumpkin, and removed the seeds and goo. The inside of the giant pumpkin was bruleed and filled with delicious pecan porter. The pumpkin was surgically repaired a la Frankenstein’s head. Gourdy goodness, a Fall classic!
People camped out and enjoyed the fine Austin weather. The party enveloped the entire industrial complex. Best Wurst was there slinging sausages. There was a Halloween Costume contest and live music performances. A great afternoon in South Austin.
I haven’t missed a (512) anniversary party yet. I have
all most of my commemorative glasses to prove it. Three out of the five vessels have survived the ignoble defeat of my clumsy fingers. I have a reputation for breaking glasses.
Did you attend the (512) Anniversary Party? Let me know what you thought. See you next year.
